The UK Planning process places an ever increasing emphasis on the importance of public consultation. It is the responsibility of the development team to structure, implement and record the engagement with public stakeholders. There are a range of methods of engaging the imagination of a stakeholder group in regard to developing designs, but one of the most successful is to introduce and illustrator to record graphically the ideas ‘live’ as they are discussed in forum. The stakeholders leave the event with a sense of authorship, whilst the development team more clearly understand the issues that are most important to the consultees.
The process is most commonly applicable to masterplan and regeneration projects where discussion focuses on the character of streetscape, architectural identity and the nature and use of larger public spaces.
